101 Dalmatians The Musical has landed at Milton Keynes Theatre, bringing Dodie Smith’s beloved story to life in a vibrant new form.
While this production remains faithful to the heart of the tale, it takes bold steps with some key elements, creating a unique experience for both fans of the original and newcomers alike.
One of the most enchanting aspects of this show is the use of puppetry to portray the Dalmatians. These lifelike creations, handled with impressive precision by puppeteers including the exceptional Emma Thornett (Perdita) and Linford Johnson (Pongo), added an extra layer of charm to the story. Watching Pongo, Perdi, and their pups move across the stage with incredibly lifelike fluidity and capturing their personalities and emotions was a true highlight.
Kym Marsh’s portrayal of Cruella de Vil didn't disappoint. She was delightfully evil, combining Cruella’s flamboyance with a menacing edge that made her both magnetic and terrifying. The scene where she turned into a werewolf and went crazy was a highlight!
The musical’s score, composed by Douglas Hodge, is entirely original, so none of the familiar Disney songs are featured, but the catchy melodies keep the energy high, and some numbers, particularly the one where Perdita sang to a poorly puppy are sure to linger with audiences after the final curtain falls.
Fans of the classic Disney film may notice that certain elements of the plot have been changed. While these tweaks add a new flavor to the narrative, purists may feel divided. Nonetheless, the story remains engaging, and the changes add freshness to the well-known plot of Pongo and Perdi’s quest to rescue their stolen puppies.
Overall, 101 Dalmatians The Musical is a delightful spectacle. With its enchanting puppetry, an unforgettable performance from Kym Marsh, and original music that brings a new rhythm to the tale, it’s a must-see for families and fans of the classic story alike. Whether you’re drawn in by nostalgia or discovering the story for the first time, this production offers plenty to enjoy.
